Reading and Writing Media

People with low vision need to be assessed to recommend the most appropriate and efficient medium for communication

When deciding on the best format(s) for people with impaired vision, think of:

  • availability of each medium - print, audio, Braille
  • near vision N8, N20 etc.
  • reading distance
  • reading speed a minimum of 20/25 words per minute is needed for efficient reading
  • comprehension
  • functional vision
  • stable/possible deterioration of vision
  • possible future needs
  • present needs
  • ability

Braille

Categories of sighted/low vision/blind, related to reading medium

1. Normal Vision Visual acuity in the better eye 6/18 or better, adequate visual field, can use normal print
2.
Low Vision

Print user, without optical low vision devices. Might need a close reading distance and good light

3.
Low Vision
Print user, with optical low vision devices (magnifying glasses or magnifier), or large print
4.
Low Vision
Braille user and can use vision for example for mobility, activities of daily living, reading large print on labels, posters etc.
5.
Blind
No useful vision. Uses tactual or audio materials in place of vision
